From the Classroom to the Stage with South Chicago Dance Theatre

We’re excited to spotlight the incredible work of South Chicago Dance Theatre (SCDT) and their dedication to empowering students through dance. By offering opportunities for students to lead their peers and create their own choreography, SCDT builds both artistic and personal leadership skills, setting dancers up for success in the studio and beyond.

Every year, SCDT honors Black History Month with powerful performances that connect students to their cultural heritage. These performances reach thousands of students across Chicago Public Schools, inspiring pride and connection to their roots. Over 10,000 students have been impacted by these performances, creating a lasting influence on our city’s arts landscape.

Thanks to multi-year grants from Ingenuity’s Creative Schools Fund, SCDT has been able to partner with schools like Ida B. Wells Preparatory Elementary, Thorp Scholastic Academy, and Hirsch Metropolitan High School to shape the next generation of dancers and leaders. From exploring Black history to sharing personal stories through choreography, SCDT is fostering a future where every voice is heard and celebrated.

SCDT is committed to mentorship, providing young people with professional dancers and teaching artists as guides. This mentorship nurtures not just technical skills, but personal and emotional growth, preparing students for careers in the arts or beyond.
